Top 4 ways to ease menopause symptoms

Dealing with menopause is no one’s idea of fun, and dealing with the symptoms of menopause can sometimes feel unbearable. Some of the most common symptoms of menopause include:

    1. Night sweats
    2. Hot flashes
    3. Weight gain
    4. Insomnia
    5. Fatigue
    6. Brain fog
    7. Bloating
    8. Mood swings

If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms more frequently, that might be a sign you’re heading into your menopausal years. Contrary to popular belief, living through menopause doesn’t have to be unbearable and can in fact be one of the most enjoyable parts of your life if you know which menopause treatments really work. Most women start experiencing early menopausal symptoms at some point in their 40s, typically around their mid- to late-40s.

Around 15% of women are fortunate to escape this time in their life relatively symptom-free or experience very few symptoms infrequently, but for the rest of us symptoms of perimenopause and menopause can sometimes have a huge effect on our life.

If you are suffering through menopause, please hear this: by making a few simple changes to your diet, you can gain control of your symptoms and reclaim your life. You’ll be well on your way to losing some of those pesky pounds that seem to have appeared overnight too. A total win-win situation!

This program is for you if...
You are struggling with midsection weight, bloating, menopause symptoms, heart palpitations, anxiety, high blood pressure/cholesterol, or pre-diabetes

Here are my top four ways you can ease your menopause symptoms through improving your nutrition and maintaining your well-being.

Break up with common menopause triggers

By this point in your life, you should have a pretty good idea on what foods your body likes and doesn’t like, but menopause can change all of that. By slowly eliminating the common triggers of menopause symptoms, you’ll start to notice that you feel better and have more energy. Some of these common triggers include:

    1. Dairy
    2. Gluten
    3. Spicy foods
    4. Caffeine
    5. Alcohol

Although it’s okay to indulge in these triggers sometimes, it’s best to avoid them as much as possible in order to keep your menopause symptoms under control.

    Do a nutrition audit

Let’s be honest… processed foods are not great for anyone, which is why swapping them out for real, whole foods is one of the best things you can do for your body as you’re experiencing menopause symptoms.

Inflammation in the body only exacerbates menopausal symptoms, so by decreasing sugary, overly-processed, pro-inflammatory foods from your diet, you’ll start to notice your symptoms of menopause decrease. Increasing the amount of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant rich foods will provide some relief as well. These include foods like fruits, veggies, fish, healthy fats, and dark chocolate.

Add more cruciferous veggies into your diet

Your body’s erratic estrogen production during menopause is the culprit when it comes to experiencing hot flashes. It has been found in multiple studies that eating cruciferous veggies and leafy greens gives your body the nutrients it needs during menopause as well as bring balance to your body’s hormone production. Try adding more broccoli, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage to as a natural remedy for hot flashes.

    Take supplements

If you’re looking to bring balance to your body beyond what nutrition might be able to provide, it’s good to include supplements into your diet. One that I consistently recommend to my clients is maca, which is an adaptogen and starchy root veggie from Peru that can be found in powder form. It nourishes your hormone-producing glands to relieve symptoms like hot flashes. Maca is also a natural mood booster and helps to boost libido as well. It also does an amazing job at improving energy levels and stamina.

Not all maca products are created equal though. The quality of the ingredients and the right phenotype combination for your unique body and stage in your cycle are critical to see its real benefits.
